The worst was a human-tall board of 'colorful flowers' blocking before the stage. That was just in front of me. Too smart people placing this useless decoration. Is this for kindergarten? | | The first half proved me no interest in Strauss' music in his end years. Metamorphosen was what a long bore to me. Neither did the four last songs took my focus, the sorrowness did not work quite well. Perhaps no sad mood for music today. | | Fleming has a creamy, beautiful voice that made her into top class singers of this Era (though I still prefer Melba on 78s). However I am not sure if her technique is the best. Strauss' four last songs were mostly did in mezza voce, where the voice did not sound opened enough to me, and the vowels were not in clear shape. This may be acceptable on recordings though. That said, her rendition was still sensuous, while her breathing was not always in ideal places. Legato and dynamics (mf or f sounds) were no problem. | | The only encore 'Over the Rainbow' was weird over the places and did not show fine music tastes. The middle voice was too strong and chesty in this tiny lullaby (possibly she hated this unreverberating concert hall). It is impossible to sing like Eva Cassidy without a mic. Nevertheless most paid expensive tickets wanted to show that they can appreciate; thus lots of applause was accounted for her fame rather than her music. | | Few words about La diva's dressing. A bright red gown for the very sad songs, then changed to a cool black dress after intermission when the music was more lively. Shouldn't the inverse make more sense? | | The orchestra has hit the soprano hard many times; those players must be thinking 'So this is top class vocalist and she must be able to overcome us'. HKPO played Caecilie in a very forte style and Fleming did look exhausted. For the best you know, she is no Wagnerian! Der Rosenkavalier suite was generally fine but one would like a more subtle rendition.</font></td></tr></table>
