Twenty minutes before performance, I slowly wandered to the Cultural Centre and then wondered why no one there. Suddenly I realized and take out the ticket to find out the venue is actually City Hall. Immediately rushed into a ferry and ran like hell, luckily I managed to take my seat before performance began. | | Yuan was not in perfect voice. The concert began with a rather crude Handel. Gluck's aria was also not suited to his masculine voice. And at the end he lost his stamina and have to rush through high notes in Largo al factotum. Probably not a good indication on vocal technique and healthiness as he is still in prime age. | | The brilliant stuff go in the middle. In my opinion he really sounded like gold in the Verdian dramatic baritone repertoire, though my "Eri tu" recording (also by him) sounded even better. | | The programme was very carefully chosen, involving many composers and some less popular works. The feelings varied however. Korngold was a good piece and excellently interpreted, as agreed by friends; another German aria was also nice. But no one could understand the composition based on Li Bai's poetry, and why the composer rendered this subtle Chinese literature into series of tasteless forte notes. | | The conductor was hardly appreciable; he was rough and unable to command the orchestra. HKPO's accompaniment was often lost in balance and lacked integrity. Guess no one really paid a lot attention as Yuan was not big title enough.</td></tr></table>
