Sitting Down With Joseph Calleja

'Pavarotti replied: "The singers generally are completely crazy; it's not possible to do our job without being crazy!"'

"I want to make it clear that when I speak of my voice I do it as if it were a separate entity."

The concert for APA graduates (except Kwan?) was executed in a fast pace, nearly a rush: singer of the next piece come on stage while audience was still clapping for the previous. But I was getting to like it. Looks like their time slot was tight under strict rules.

I thought the female singers slightly outperformed the males. Three sopranos: Leung has subtlety, Yim was excellently lyric, and Ip has the dramatic power. Mezzo Lin shooked the house with her Composer's aria; to my surprise, she is younger but vocally brighter than the more experienced Sze.

Quah was as usual musical. Tam's tightness and high note insecurity affected his performance very much. Lim had told me his own voice not in best condition, and the vocal production indeed got shallower at some point; but the solo musical piece was very well. Kwan was a big-banger on low notes, but he is also whom I wish more flowingness from.

First time the audience clapped too early in the Lakme duet - There's still a short phrase from backstage. Luckily I knew it. But I could not avoid the next embarassment, when I clapped early with others in Yim's Chinese piece after intermission......

連駱生這樣的中年人都會對「應該幹甚麼」感到疑惑。
