A small choir of Hong Kong students have recently won high praise in Israel - all because of a short film that its members posted on YouTube.
The film (url) that was posted 2 years ago documents a performance by the choir from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in which its member perform moving portions from the sound track of the film “Schindler’s List” in Hebrew and Yiddish.
Shortly before the latest Holocaust Day, after the film had been on the site for a long time without drawing much attention, it was discovered by an Israeli viewer
who had started to to distribute it via Email to his friends as “A Chinese choir performs songs in Hebrew to celebrate Holocaust Day”.
Within a few days, the film became a great hit in Israel and had tens of thousands viewings in Israel and abroad, receiving hundreds of moving reactions by Israelis and Jews everywhere congratulating the choir for its moving performance.
Leon Chu, the choir’s director, was deeply moved to discover that the film had become such a hit in Israel. “This excites and makes me very happy” he said. “Who would believe that we could reach people in this way”, adding “That is the power of music”. He also said that in the past few weeks he received thousands of emails from excited surfers, and the sound track has found its way into Jewish blogs abroad.
And where does this impressive command of Hebrew come from? According to choir director Chu, its members were coached by Professor Meng Jen-hua of the Institute of Jewish Studies at the Nanjing University in China, who had lived in
Israel for a number of years.
